Have you heard of ‘Ryan’s Rule’?

Doctor

Ryan’s Rule was developed several years ago in response to the death of Ryan Saunders. Ryan died due to an infection which led to Toxic Shock Syndrome. Ryan’s parents believed that their concerns about Ryan’s worsening condition were not listened to or acted on in time to save his life. Following his death, the Department of Health introduced Ryan’s Rule, giving patients, carers and family members a way to escalate their concerns.

The escalation can be done in three steps:

  1. Talk to a nurse or doctor about your concerns and if you do not get the response you were hoping for, go to the next step.
  2. Ask to speak with the nurse in charge of the shift and explain your concerns. If you do not get the response you require, go to the next step.
  3. Phone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or ask a nurse to phone for you, and request a Ryan’s Rule Clinical Review. From here they will ask you for additional information which will start a review process.

This rule applies to ALL patients admitted to Queensland Health hospitals, and in some Hospital in the Home (HITH) services.

There are some wonderful resources that you can access to get more information for yourself or someone you know if they need the assistance.

This Video gives some more information about Ryan’s Rule and how it is applied.

There is a Fact sheet outlining the process. This is also available in other languages following this link.
