What is Salary Packaging?
Salary packaging is about paying less income tax and increasing your take-home pay. Your salary is used to pay everyday expenses before income tax is calculated. Expenses like your:
- Mortgage or rent
- Groceries
- Insurance and car costs
- Utilities (e.g. electricity, rates etc)
- Holiday spending
- Entertainment (e.g. movies, dining out etc)

What can I Salary Package?
The top three most popular expenses to salary package are:
- General living expenses such as rent or mortgage payments, credit card and personal loan payments, household utilities such as gas and electricity and car expenses including petrol and registration.
- Entertainment benefits such as meals and drinks consumed in a restaurant, café or hotel, holiday car hire and/or accommodation, reception venue hire, and external catering costs paid by you for private events. Capped at $2,650 a year.
- A car (new or used): Salary packaging a car – also known as a novated lease – is one of the most cost-effective ways to buy and run a car. AccessPay will even find a car for you, so you don’t have to spend your weekends in a car yard!

How It Works
Funds are sent to AccessPay without tax, then paid either directly to your expenses or on to your salary packaging card. By packaging at the maximum amount of $15,900 a year, you can increase your tax-free threshold from $18,000 to $33,900.
But what does that mean exactly? Let’s look at some examples:
General Living
Meet Olivia. She works part-time as a support worker. Last year, Olivia earned $50,000. She chooses to use the benefits of salary packaging to pay her:
- rent
- groceries
- petrol
- car registration.
Last year, Olivia saw her take-home pay increase by $3,562 a year!
General Living and Entertainment
Meet Greg. He’s 60 and works fulltime in the Support Centre earning $60,000 a year. He chooses to salary package, so he doesn’t have to pay tax on certain everyday expenses such as:
- insurance
- utilities
- mortgage.
He also has a salary packaging card he uses to pay for his entertainment costs when he takes his wife out to dinner or away for their annual holiday. Greg’s take-home pay increased by $5,936 a year when he signed up to salary package!
Novated Leasing
Brett earns $70,000 a year and works in one of our regional locations. Last month he traded his 20-year-old Toyota Camry for a brand-new Hyundai Tucson using a novated lease. AccessPay made the entire process so easy for him.
Over a five-year period, Brett saved $17,083 simply by using salary packaging to buy a new car. They:
- sourced his car from a network of 650+ dealers
- arranged test drives and negotiated the best price
- organised all of the paperwork and calculated the deductions
- explained how all future running expenses for his car would be paid for
- will now manage all of the services and insurance.
Remote Area Benefits
Meet Mark. He works and lives in a remote area and his annual salary is $80,000. Mark has a mortgage and it is his primary residence. His annual mortgage statement shows total interest paid was $14,000. Mark can salary package an additional $7,000 on top of his $15,900 limit, and will reduce his taxable income by the same amount. Doing this increases Mark’s annual take home pay by $2,100.
Refer the Remote Area Fact Sheet for more information.
