Our very own Yuki Wei, Performance and Partnership Leader of Disability Employment Services (DES), with Community Solutions, has been selected as a Committee Member for The Access and Equity Advisory Committee, City of Kingston!
The committee recruits members with strong community connections and works together toward a sustainable, equal and more inclusive community. The committee has a strong strategic focus on people with disability, cultural diversity, gender equality, family violence, gambling, seniors, and LGBTQIA+.
“My personal interests and current role in Disability Employment Services (DES) lets me work closely with the people we support and community partners, where I can identify access and equity issues within the community, and report back to the advisory committee.”
Yuki is especially passionate about societal issues and, while on the committee, wants to encourage a positive response and raise awareness of difficulties ethnic communities face.
“Mental health and family violence are two of the major issues among ethnic communities. However, due to language barriers, many people are unaware of how to access support services. The ethnic communities would benefit from continued training to raise awareness for mental health and family violence. When we generate promotional materials, we must ensure the information is translated into different languages to increase accessibility.”

As a migrant woman herself, Yuki faced challenges when she first came to Australia, and her goal is to advocate for better access to support services and ongoing training.
“I was fortunate enough, I had the right support and education, started as a student, then my work placement helped me land my first professional job. People from multicultural backgrounds, especially new arrivals who face language barriers, need guidance and support to help them start their life in Australia. That feeling of belonging and finding employment is extremely important.”
Yuki is appreciative of the support and education she received throughout her journey and wants to give others the same opportunity.

“Every time I recall my journey, I still remember each person who helped me in the past, and how important that ‘little help’ contributed to my success today. I believe now it’s my turn to make a change for the community.”
As a Performance and Partnership Leader, Yuki truly enjoys making a positive impact on her team and customers, accrediting that support and seeing people succeed is the “best feeling”. Fluent herself in Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese and Hakka) she strongly encourages workplace diversity and champions the new perspectives and increased innovation and performance that a diverse team brings.
“My current team came from 5 ethnicities, speaking 6 different languages. These elements not only make the workplace so much fun but also has plenty of work benefits. Our bilingual skills are an advantage when communicating with customers and employers, but also set a good example for employers and partners to employ people from a wide range of backgrounds.”
She inspires her team to be the provider of choice across the Bayside region, supporting sites in Cheltenham, Springvale and Dandenong.
The City of Kingston is in Yuki’s faithful hands and we wish her all the best!
