How Cameron’s passion connects him to his community
Cameron and Kaleb Hendren, from Toowoomba L&L, are on a journey through music and film, inspiring each other and their wider community.
Cameron, blind since birth, discovered his passion for music at the age of three when he instinctively played ‘Happy Birthday’ on a toy piano at his Granddad’s birthday party.

“I just heard the song and played it. That’s how it’s always been,” he shares.
“The notes just appear, and I know them. Once I find the note, I lock it in, and it’s like I know it forever.”
His remarkable talent became a lifelong pursuit that has not only fuelled his personal growth but also connected him to others.
Music has helped Cameron build a meaningful social life, particularly through his performances at Toowoomba Irish Club’s open mic nights.
“In a very big way, it has shaped my friendships and social life,” Cameron says
Kaleb’s role in supporting and empowering Cameron
Kaleb, now an Implementation Lead at Toowoomba L&L, first noticed Cameron’s musical abilities at a Friday disco three years ago. Inspired by Cameron’s talent, Kaleb took steps to support Cameron in showcasing his passion. One initiative was a musical trivia program for the elderly community, where Cameron took a lead role, using his music to engage participants. This collaboration blossomed into a deeper partnership, where Kaleb supported Cameron in creating a documentary that captured his musical journey.
Kaleb and Cameron’s documentary, The Power of Music, beautifully portrays how music has enriched Cameron’s life and connected him to others.
The film won the Regional Nova Employment Choice Award at the Focus on Ability Awards, proof to both Cameron’s talent and Kaleb’s commitment to empowering him through collaboration.

“Kaleb supports me in finding opportunities to share my music. He’s not just a support worker—he’s a friend,” Cameron explains, highlighting how their relationship transcends work and empowers him to pursue his dreams.
Empowerment through collaboration
Kaleb’s encouragement has helped Cameron gain confidence in advocating for himself and sharing his music with the world. Together, they continue to perform at local venues, including a café’s open mic sessions, where their collaboration strengthens both their friendship and their connection to the community.
“We really built our relationship through working on the documentary. Kaleb said
“Cameron is a natural in front of the camera, and I was thrilled with how it turned out.”
Their shared passion for music and storytelling has resulted in a partnership where both individuals are empowered, growing personally and professionally.
Cameron’s advice for others
Cameron’s journey stands as a reminder to people with disabilities to pursue their passions with determination and resilience.
“Stop worrying about being stuck or feeling sorry for yourself. Just get out there and give it a go.
“It feels fantastic to be part of the local music industry in Toowoomba.” Cameron said proudly
His message is clear: by surrounding yourself with supportive people and pursuing what you love, you can create a community where everyone lifts each other up.
His story exemplifies how embracing your passions can turn possibilities into reality, creating connections that uplift and inspire. 💙
