In 1984, Australia was undergoing economic reform, ’80s music was dominating the airwaves, and life felt simpler without today’s digital distractions. On 23 January of that year, Ernest Cocking started his first day at Endeavour Foundation Industries (EFI) Rockhampton, where he would go on to dedicate an incredible 40 years of service. His early days involved trailing and stacking machined timber lengths—work that would become a central part of his legacy.
Fast forward to today, Ernest has officially retired, marking the end of an era at the social enterprise in Rockhampton. To celebrate, a lunch party was held in his honour, recognising his immense contributions over four decades. It was a well-deserved tribute to a man who has consistently shown dedication, passion, and care in everything he did.
During the event, Ernest shared a heartfelt speech with his colleagues. He spoke of his pride in having worked at Endeavour for so many years and expressed his hope that the younger generation currently at work would experience the same sense of fulfilment and enjoyment that he had throughout his long career. It was a touching moment that highlighted Ernest’s commitment not just to his work, but also to the community he helped build over the years.
Ernest’s role in stacking and trailing machined timber may have changed with time, but his impact on those around him remains as strong as ever. His work ethic, attention to detail, and the example he set for others will leave a lasting legacy at the social enterprise in Rockhampton.
On behalf of everyone, we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ernest on reaching this remarkable milestone. We wish you all the best in this next chapter of your life. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Ernest!
