Telina makes her driving dreams come true

From nerves to newfound freedom – Telina, who has worked at Mackay social enterprise for almost 30 years, proves that hard work and determination can lead to meaningful milestones.

Telina recently achieved a significant goal she had long dreamed of – buying her own car 🚗 and starting her driving journey.  With support from the team at Mackay social enterprise, Telina demonstrated that with a clear goal, a solid plan and a supportive community, anything is possible. A positive outlook and a dose of perseverance help, too. Telina’s driving journey began with a mix of nerves and excitement.  She said:

I was very nervous when I first started to drive, as I had been waiting for years for it to happen.

Mastering the road rules proved to be her biggest challenge, but Telina approached it with determination and a strong work ethic.

I studied every chance I got. There was never a time I thought I could not do it if I worked hard enough.

Although Telina did not pass her driving test on the first try, her persistence and dedication have brought her closer to success.

Telina’s progress continues to boost her confidence. The next challenge was purchasing her own car 🚗, and achieving it required careful planning.  She set a savings target, expecting it would take two years to reach. But with discipline, Telina hit her goal ahead of schedule, buying a car in just 18 months. Telina said:

Having my own car means having more freedom.

This independence allows her to explore opportunities and manage her daily life with greater ease. From arranging transport to her driving assessment to offering ongoing encouragement, her team in Mackay has been there every step of the way.

“They made sure I had transport to and from my assessment at the Department of Main Roads,” Telina said.

“Even though I did not pass the first time, everyone was so kind and supportive.

“They told me not to give up and reminded me I had done a great job, which made me feel so much better.”

At the social enterprise. Telina thrives in her role as a warehouse assistant. She picks and packs orders, serves as a forklift spotter and supports her team with her positive attitude and dedication.

“I enjoy my friendships at Endeavour Foundation and making new friends,” Telina said.

Working here makes me proud and gives me confidence in myself to grow.

Telina’s story is an example of resilience, determination and how the impact of a supportive community can make great things happen.
