Last year, Damian Sorensen approached one of our newest Community Solutions hubs in Coolum Beach for guidance in finding meaningful employment. It wasn’t long before he was offered an active role as a kitchenhand at the Coolum Surf Club.
Damian is hitting the ground running in 2023 and is loving his new role!
I like talking to people and I like food, so this role is perfect for me.
I also love how my colleagues and I get along and tell jokes; my colleagues are more like brothers to me and very supportive.

I want everyone to see my ability, not my disability. I’m always looking for ways to better myself.
Damian

Damian’s Recruitment Partner, Daniel Rowe, worked with him to become job ready. He believes that building a strong connection between candidates and employees plays an important role in supporting people to achieve employment.
Coolum Surf Club agreed, stating Damian’s onboarding through Community Solutions was seamless.
Working with Daniel and the Community Solutions team made the entire hiring and induction process easy, paperwork was streamlined – nothing was too hard – and Damian was upskilled and ready to go from day one. Without any hassle

Damien is an amazing and fun-loving addition to our kitchen team – he’s easy to work with, and we know we can trust him to get his tasks done with a smile on his face.

This journey of growth and independence is shared by Bokarina local Luke Thomson, who is also starting the new year with a new career.
Community Solutions work with people to identify their needs, upskill them if necessary, then ultimately find a rewarding paid role within their community. For Luke, this meant embarking on a new role as a support worker for people with disability.

I’m really excited about my new job, and to be able to help others is so rewarding.
Although I have a physical disability, it hasn’t, nor should it, prevent me from working and learning new skills or being able to help others who need assistance.
Luke
Community Solutions offer a supportive pathway of possibilities to instil confidence and offer meaningful and rewarding employment opportunities.
We are there every step of the way. We will take them shopping to find interview clothes, we accompany them to interviews, and depending on the situation, we’ll even buy them the tools they might need for their role, or support them in getting tickets or licenses needed for the job.
Daniel
All without it costing them a thing and within the comforts of their close community.
Our invested approach is proactively helping to lower the unemployment rate for people with disability, which presently is twice as high compared to people without disability.
