New accessible home enriches Petrie community

It’s important to us that more homes meet the current and future needs of people who require greater accessibility.

This is why we launched our My Home, My Life (MHML) initiative in 2020.

Four years on, we have built and renovated 65 homes in Queensland, adhering to the highest level of accessibility and livability according to Livable Housing Australia Guidelines.

That includes a total investment of $2.3m in Moreton Bay to renovate four homes for 16 people and build another brand-new home in Petrie for up to four people.

The latter was made possible thanks to a generous bequest from a local mother, Glady Leitch, whose children we supported for many years.

Executive General Manager of Home and Community, Leanne Rutherford, paid tribute to the Leitch family last week during a ‘Welcome Home’ event to celebrate the build’s completion.

“This immensely generous gift enabled us to create a modern accessible home, that will in turn give the gift of independent living to people with disability here in Petrie,” said Leanne.

The home’s design offers a safe and comfortable space for people to thrive independently with support when they need it. It includes an expansive open plan, extra-wide corridors and doorways, a side-opening oven, adjustable kitchen benches, and an extra room to enable 24/7 support.

The event was attended by local MPs, community members and special guests, including Glady’s niece, Beverley Sparks, and her sister, Ailsa Dutton.

Reflecting on her aunt’s legacy, Beverley voiced her admiration for the new home.

“It’s brilliant the way Endeavour Foundation has it now,” she said.

It’s so satisfying to think what the home will be used for, and I wish the people who will be living there all the best.

“There were lots of happy times at Petrie with Aunty Glad so let’s hope that continues for the people who will live here.”

Congratulations to all teams involved, including Property and Service Delivery, who support our belief that people with disability have the right to suitable, affordable, and secure homes, just like anyone else.
