Home sweet (accessible) home for Robert, Cameron and Janna #MyHomeMyLife

Robert, Cameron and Janna currently live together in a private rental with a steep driveway and step-in shower, but this week they move into their newly built, fully accessible home in Toowoomba.

We joined them, their family and friends, and other guests – including Mayor Geoff McDonald and Garth Hamilton MP – last week for a Welcome Home celebration.

Their modern duplex is one of two new units, designed to provide a safe and comfortable space for the close friends to thrive independently with support when needed.

Extra-wide doorways, open-plan living areas, an adjustable countertop, flat shower floors, and an extra room for 24/7 support are just some of the ways their current and future needs will be met for years to come.

“I’ve been blind since birth so I need a home that has lots of spatial awareness factored in,” said Cameron.

I’m a big believer in a house with space – open rooms, no chairs to run into, the table not in the way.

These units are two of the 65 homes across Queensland we’ve built or fully renovated, as part of our My Home, My Life initiative, to help ensure people can live the way they want, with whom they want, for as long as they want.

My Home, My Life is Endeavour Foundation’s biggest investment in our 70-year history, stemming from our belief that people with disability have the same right as everyone else to live in a suitable, affordable and secure home.

Thanks to our generous donors and supporters, we have invested $35 million in the past four years to make the hope of a secure and accessible home into reality for as many people as possible. For Robert, Cameron and Janna, this week is the start of a new and exciting chapter, one undoubtedly full of music, growth and laughter.

They are also on the lookout for neighbours, with the other unit in the duplex still taking applications for three people who would like to live there together. Do you support someone who would be interested? Please refer them to our National Contact Centre at 1800 112 112 or [email protected].
