Mickyla Gowell has been working as a Defence Service Assistant in the Defence Assistance Program (DAP) at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville for eight years and is completing a traineeship at DAP to become a qualified Support Worker.
People had said to me you would make a great support worker, and it is always something I wanted to study. I found doing the Certificate III through TAFE didn’t really suit me as it was all online and the pace was quite fast.”
“Being able to complete the Certificate III through a traineeship at DAP has given me more choice and flexibility. It is also really great knowing I’ve got two years to get the work done, there is no rush to do assignments.

My trainer, Uncle Dave is really good, he says, “use the world of knowledge you have from being a client.” Uncle Dave doesn’t give me the answers, he helps build my confidence to find answers within myself.
“My enjoyment as a Support Worker will be seeing a person slowly make progress to a goal they want to achieve and knowing I helped them achieve it.
“When I finish the traineeship, I’d like to have a break from study for a while. Open employment has always been the goal, so I’ll look at different job ads and see what it’s like in Support Worker world. I do like having DAP as a stable hub, whether I do support work at Endeavour Foundation or for another organisation,.
DAP Team Coordinator Sara said, “The rest of the team look to Mickyla as a leader and even when she is not there, people say Mickyla does it this way, maybe I should do it that way.”
Mickyla and team-mate Ashley recently exceeded expectations by completing a large scanning and cataloguing project in weeks rather than the months it was estimated the project may have taken. It really lightened the administrative load for the Unit. The Unit acknowledged this by awarding Mickyla and Ashley with a special Unit Coin. Coins are not awarded regularly and only if someone has gone above and beyond expectations or made an important contribution to the Unit.
“Mickyla is very humble and a very highly regarded employee at DAP. She will make an excellent support worker as she really wants to support people to reach their goals,” Sara said
