Meet Jeremy – a DAP Original Great (OG)

Jeremy Gawne is one of DAP’s longest serving employees and ‘Original Greats’ (OG). He has been working at Gallipoli Barracks in the DAP program since the program began in 2014.

I absolutely love working with Endeavour Foundation.

I really like Endeavour Foundation and Audra (Defence Support Officer, DSO) has done a very good job with bus transportation and has had great contact with me, and we’ve had some good times.  Audra gives 100% effort on my good work and helps me improve my skills.

And now I’m able to work in the AAFCANS.

Jeremy’s Mum Alison said; “The Defence Assistance Program has been beneficial for Jeremy as the social aspects and requirements of being a “worker” are necessary skills he needs to develop and the support he has been given has allowed him to feel secure. Once confident and feeling valued, he flourishes.”

Jeremy works two days a week at Gallipoli Barracks and since Endeavour Foundation has been operating the program, his role has expanded from office-based work to an opportunity with the Army and Air Force Canteen Service (AAFCANS). Jeremy supports AAFCANS by re-stocking shelves and fridges.

He is also quite meticulous with his other tasks at DAP, including sorting, shredding and filling envelopes for large mail-outs.

I love working, it’s different, and it’s a change with Endeavour Foundation at the Barracks.

Jeremy has been working with his Speech Therapist, Megan, who provides Audra with weekly updates of his progress and highlights how Audra and other DSO’s can best support Jeremy through reinforcement of those communication skills in the workplace.

As Jeremy is a master with the shredding machine, he has delivered safety presentations to new DSA’s and at the family visit day about the correct way to sort papers pre-shredding and how to use the shredding machine safely.

I did a presentation on using the shredding machine, it was brilliant. I let people know they need gloves and special glasses and if there are no staples the shredder works 400% better

DAP also provides Jeremy opportunities to practice his social communication skills with his co-workers and ask them questions about what they have been doing and follow up questions to have a conversation.

Jeremy has many friends and interests outside of work where he is also able practice his conversation skills. He plays percussion instruments in the Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra, has regular rehearsals and performances, enjoys going out for coffee and to the gym a few days a week. He enjoys keeping fit with ocean swimming and competitively in the pool at Special Olympics events and in the Pan Pacific Masters.

He also holds the title of ‘Julia Zemiro’s number 1 fan’, with a lovely message and autograph from entertainer and TV show host, Julia Zemiro on Jeremy’s ‘Number One Fan sheet.’

I love her funny laugh, she’s so funny and she said, I love to have a number one fan.
