Mark takes to the BBQ during a power outage

As we all know, Cyclone Alfred made a big impact in South-East Queensland and Northern NSW. In the Home division, there was a lot of uncertainty around when the Cyclone was going to come, what was going to happen and how this would affect the people we support. There have been some great stories that have come from this time, stories of resilience, unity and ingenuity. And this story ticks every box.

The staff and people we support at Tugun pulled together to make the most of a very wet and windy time. As the weather set in, Mark’s room had some damage to the roof, but despite this, he had the best attitude and loved every minute of what became known as ‘camping in the house!’.

When they lost power, housemate Mark jumped into action to cook for his housemates on the outdoor BBQ. With support worker Ashley stepping up as sous chef, Mark took to the BBQ, something that is not done very often, and with this being Mark’s first time. The independence shown by Mark as he learned a new skill was awesome. When the team checked in with Mark to see how he was doing during the cyclone, he always said with a smile, “I’m a happy man!”.

What could have been an anxiety filled time, was actually filled with wonderful moments like dancing and singing… a favourite over this time was…. ‘Rain, rain, go away!’, how very apt.

A huge thanks to the team at Tugun, and at many other sites, who were a huge support to our people during this time. You really are #TeamPossible!
