June is International Pride Month

Pride month is a time to celebrate the LGBTIQA+ community, a time to share awareness of diverse experiences, and to acknowledge ongoing challenges still present today.

What is Pride Month?

Pride month started in 1970 and recognises the first anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York, an important civil movement for LGBTIQA+ equality. While there has been some progress, the LGBTQIA+ community continue to be discriminated against with stigma still prevalent around the world. Taking time to understand diverse experiences and perspectives will help you to become an active ally and create inclusive workplaces and support services.

Discriminating against someone on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics or disability is illegal under state and federal laws. We want everyone to feel safe and included and feel like they belong.

LGBTIQA+ people with intellectual disability have many people in their lives who can impact how and when they can express or share their experiences. We all play an important role through our everyday interactions so that the LGBTIQA+ community feel included, respected and celebrated.

Creating inclusive workplaces and support services

Historical attitudes that are unsupportive of the LGBTIQA+ community have had a significant impact as to whether someone feels safe accessing our services or seeking employment. Consider how you can demonstrate clear and supportive signals at your site that can have a positive impact to someone’s wellbeing:
