Joe and Felix: A Purr-fect Pair in Hervey Bay

If cartoons have taught pet-owners anything, it’s that Felix is a perfect name for a black and white cat.

A few months ago, Joe began regularly visiting the local animal adoption centre, spending time with the rescue cats and kittens. It wasn’t long before he realised, he wanted a furry friend of his own. With the support of his manager and Support Workers, Joe set out on a journey to make that dream a reality.

To show he was ready for the responsibility, Joe wrote a detailed two-page letter to the Public Trustee, outlining all the research he’d done. From the cost of food and care to vaccination needs and safety considerations, Joe thought of everything. With help from Support Workers, he submitted his plan and also sought approval from regional housing to have a cat at home.

Once both approvals came through, it was time for the fun part – finding the perfect pet. At the centre, a little black and white cat named Fox stole Joe’s heart. He renamed him Felix, feeling it suited him better.

He wouldn’t leave my side,

With support, Joe visited the bank, then shopped at Kmart for all the essentials: toys, a collar and tag, a comfy bed, scratching posts, food, and litter. Felix even had his microchip and a little vet procedure.

But that’s a secret ‘cause it’s private,

Felix officially moved in on Monday, and the two have been inseparable ever since. While Joe’s not the biggest fan of cleaning the litter tray, he says,

Getting a cat has been the best thing ever and I love him so much!
