Jason Smollen, a Supported Employee from Wacol, recently went on a well-deserved holiday with his family and it turned into a journey full of connection, discovery, and a few seriously legendary burgers.
Jason travelled up the coast to Mon Repos Turtle Centre near Bundaberg to see turtle hatchlings and explore the beach. Along the way, the family stopped in at our very own Kingaroy Kitchen, where the team recognised Jason from their own visit to the Wacol site.
They couldn’t believe I had 35 years of service. They all said they had 20 years at Kingaroy. The food was amazing – one of the best lunches I’ve ever had!
Jason said.
The visit included massive burgers, milkshakes, fruit cake, jam drops and even some shopping for the family’s favourite Kingaroy goodies. His mum, a longtime fan of Kingaroy Kitchen Christmas hams, loved visiting the factory in person.
At Mon Repos, Jason and his family explored turtle nests and learned how endangered leatherback turtles come to the beach to rest and lay eggs. Although they didn’t spot any hatchlings this time, the experience left a big impact.
We explored wetlands, saw kangaroos, bush turkeys, a goanna, and more than 10 types of birds. I swam in a turtle-shaped pool, had a BBQ on our deck, and ate barramundi and chips on the beach.
said Jason.
The trip was a true celebration of independence, joy and connection and a reminder that the people we support thrive both at work and beyond.
It was great to see Jason so relaxed and happy on this trip. He really came out of his shell.
– Paul Smollen, Jason’s brother
