Cairns-based Support Worker, Jashinta Nair, was able to complete a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) within only four weeks through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)!
RPL identifies and validates the skills you have gained through prior study or previous work experience, saving you time and allowing you to earn your qualification faster.
Jashinta began her application for RPL straight away once she received the information pack from TAFE .
This involved compiling documentation demonstrating how she prepares progress notes and collects other information to demonstrate her knowledge of support work for people with disability.
With two and half years’ experience in support work and great time management skills, Jashinta was able to progressively complete the documentation in her spare time over a couple of weeks.
She also saved time with demonstrating her use of progress notes by seeking approval from her portfolio manager to utilise de-identified notes she had previously created.
“I found the process very straightforward and the theory relatable,” Jashinta said.
“It did teach me to see things differently as now I have more of a theoretical understanding. We do these things every day and now I’m now relating the theory to the practice more.”
The next step was to email the documentation, and schedule and attend two, one hour phone meetings with the TAFE assessor.
Jashinta was able to fit in achieving the qualification while working and commencing a Diploma of Nursing at the same time.
Jashinta’s advice for fellow support workers considering completing Certificate III through RPL is:
Do it, take the opportunity to do it, you won’t regret it.
