Jake and Jeremy thrive in Supported Independent Living

We are committed to matching people looking for a Supported Independent Living (SIL) home with housemates who they get along and have similar interests with. This was the case for Cairns housematesJake and Jeremy, who moved in together after a successful three-month trial period.

Before this, Jeremy was living with someone else who moved out to live on his own and Jake lived on his own, but sought companionship and socialisation. The gentlemen first met in their community, with their teams organising activities multiple times a week, including barbeques, nature walks and swimming, to help Jake and Jeremy connect.

Fast forward 12 months, and Jake and Jeremy are not only housemates but the best of friends who have supported each other to become more confident and independent.

Jake’s social skills have especially improved with Jeremy’s influence. He now meets up with a friend every week and communicates his needs better to support workers by showing them what he wants. For example, he will get out the peanut butter or a loaf of bread to indicate to employees when he is hungry.

As for Jeremy, his support workers have noticed that he spends much less time in his games room alone to hang out with Jake in their lounge room. They also have improved their health and fitness by going on afternoon walks together. Sometimes they even motivate each other to exercise by competing on who gets home first.

When they are at home, Jake and Jeremy work together to complete routine household tasks like washing the dishes and putting clothes into the washing machine. They also enjoy listening, dancing and relaxing to music. Music has been so beneficial for Jake, that his team have supported him to join a drumming group. He is also working on using a spoon and fork when eating to increase his fine motor skills. He has made fantastic progress with this, which has boosted his confidence.

We are thrilled to share Jake and Jeremy’s amazing accomplishments with the support of their team and each other.
