International Day of People with Disability 2022

International Day of People with Disability 2022

International Day of People with Disability is held on 3 December every year. It’s an important day in our calendar, dedicated to increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

This year, we’re encouraging everyone to rethink misconceptions about what people with disability can and can’t do.

“Anything is possible. Just watch me!”

In the lead up to International Day of People with Disability, we invite you to watch Georgina, Andrew and Heather make their possibilities a reality by pursuing things they love.

Andrew attends Ipswich L&L and recently moved into one of our SIL homes.

“I love to cook for my friends at my house where I live,” he said.

“And when I go home to my Dad’s, I help to cook for him and my stepmum Margaret. I love cooking nice things like jam and cream pikelets.”

Andrew’s other favourite meal to make is steak with mushroom gravy, green peas and mash potato with garlic. He really likes garlic in his potatoes.

One day I’m going on Masterchef.

At first, Georgina used to go boxing individually until her trainers recommended that she join the Endeavour Foundation ‘Box and Balance’ group.

Now, in alignment with her goals to ‘keep fit and healthy’, ‘access the community’ and ‘develop friendship groups’, Georgina heads to the boxing ring with her friends at Alex Hills L&L every Tuesday.

“I like boxing because I like learning new skills,” she said. “It makes me feel strong and helps me to build muscles.”

One day I want to go ten rounds in the ring.

Heather has worked at Wacol social enterprises for 8.5 years.

She loves her workplace because she gets to hang out with her friends, learn new things and challenge herself.

“I love my job and my friends [at Endeavour Foundation] so much!” she said.

In pursuit of her leadership goals, she completed QDN’s 2021 Emerging Leaders Program, dedicated to developing leaders with disability to ensure that there is ‘nothing about us without us.’

Her other goals include working on her communication skills and being a good role model.

One day I want to be a Team Leader.

– Heather
