Special Olympics

In just five days, 731 athletes from around Australia will unite in Launceston, Tasmania to compete in the Special Olympics Australia National Games (17-21 October 2022), an epic event which occurs every four years.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions to people with intellectual disability, and in doing so, provides life-changing benefits that transcend the playing field. Through the power and joy of sport, these athletes are breaking down barriers and inspiring people to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential.

We are extremely proud of the extraordinary people we support who are representing their state and preparing to compete in the sport(s) they love.

Zac Kimber

Swimming – Butterfly

With the love of sport running through his veins, Business Solutions Southport employee, Zac plays many sports including running and soccer.

But swimming, particularly in butterfly stroke, has his heart.

Bocce

SIL housemate, Meaghan has been associated with Special Olympics for 20 years.

As a social butterfly who enjoys connecting with her sporting and #TeamPossible community, she is looking forward to meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

Geoffrey Roennfeldt

100m and 200m sprint, shot put and turbo javelin

Geoffrey from Alex Hills L&L loves making new friends and keeping fit.

Geoffrey has been involved in Special Olympics for 12 years and has won many medals from competing all over Australia.

This year, he is especially looking forward to the opening ceremony where he will be holding the flag and competing to win some medals to add to his very large medal collection.

Basketball

Ashelly from Alex Hills L&L loves basketball because it allows her to have fun and hang out with her friends.

“I find that basketball helps me to keep fit throughout the year. I also really look forward to basketball carnival days that are held each term.

Everyone in my team is always pumped to do well and events like these are where my team come together to do their best.”

Travis McKenzie

Bowling

Travis is excited about competing this year and thinks he might have a good chance of winning.

He is also looking forward to making some great friends and hanging with his Business Solutions Bundaberg workmates, Nicholas and Bruce, who are also competing.

Nicholas Jefferson

Bowling

Nicholas has already won twenty medals and trophies this year alone!

Now, he is heading to Tasmania with a goal to increase his medal tally and have fun in the process.

Running and shot put

Bruce is super excited and has been telling everyone about the games since he was selected last year.

Bruce has been training hard and is looking forward to catching up with his friends, who he met at past sporting events.

Matthew Pascoe

Athletics – 200m, 400m, 800m and Relay Events

Business Solutions Geebung Site Manager, Kelli Hennessey shared that employee, Matthew is an outstanding young man who likes to clean the site’s fridges and microwaves to ensure they are hygienic for his colleagues. He also likes to go out with his support worker to South Bank on weekends.


“I love running and I love competing with other people. It is fun to go away and have fun.”

Tennis

Administration Assistant, Alex Baker is pumped for next week and can’t wait to compete in the sport he loves.

“I am really looking forward to playing in Tassie again for the first time in 18 years with my teammates and friends. The things I love most about tennis are the competitiveness, the technical challenges, the opportunity to represent my state, and the ability to capitalise on one of my talents.”

Swimming

In her day-to day, SIL housemate and Business Solutions Wacol employee, Grace enjoys swimming at her local pool, attending Coopers Plains L&L hub, looking after her own garden, and cooking for family and friends.

“What I like about swimming the most is working on my times and training to win a gold medal. I enjoy being competitive with my friends and seeing myself in pictures from events I’ve competed in. My friends at work are cheering me on. I have been swimming in the Special Olympics for over 10 years. I already have lots of gold medals at home that my mum is very proud of.”

Basketball

This will be Business Solutions Mackay employee, Chloe’s first time competing in basketball at the National Games level. She is extremely excited to have been selected this year and can’t wait to compete.

Tegan O'Keeffe

Tenpin Bowling

Business Solutions Mackay employee, Tegan has competed in bowling on a state and national level, including the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi!

TJ Straw

Basketball

Business Solution Mackay employee, TJ also dabbles in tenpin bowling, but basketball is his passion.

“I’ve always wanted to play for Queensland, and I was very excited at the time (of my selection).”

Shane Cooks Reynolds

🟣 Shane Cooks Reynolds

Basketball

Business Solution Mackay employee, Shane also plays tenpin bowling and is on the same team as TJ. This is his third time competing in the National Games. He says it doesn’t matter what sport he is playing, just as long as he is being active.

“I do like to mix things up a bit because basketball is a running, fitness sport, whereas tenpin is more of a skill sport. I just like the fact that I get to go out, meet people and get exercise.”

Gymnastics

Accomplished gymnast and Business Solutions Wacol employee, Sophia is representing Queensland in the sport she loves!

She has worked with us on and off since 2014 and is excited to compete in another National Games!

Lauren

🟣 Lauren Chester

Tennis

Business Solutions Wacol employee, Lauren already has a few sporting awards under her belt, but is hoping to add a few more to the tally!

She has played other sports including gymnastics, but will be competing in singles and doubles tennis this year.

Ben

Bocce

This year will be Business Solutions Wacol employee, Ben’s sixth Special Olympics, having started when he was just 13 years old!

Ben has beaten records and has won so many medals over the years for different sports including swimming and tenpin bowling. His teammates at work call him ‘Legend’.)

Chris McMahon

Ten Pin Bowling

Chris began his sporting career in 1990 with swimming, but has since pursued bowling.

“I like meeting new people and playing in a team.”

Rachel Thorpe

Bowling

Keon Park employee, Rachel has been bowling for nine years.

Similar to her job, where her favourite part is building friendships with her colleagues, Rachel enjoys the team aspect of bowling and has been attending training in Geelong leading up to the games.

Business Solutions Kew employee, Andrew participates in Special Olympics Victoria’s Athlete Leadership Program and plays a variety of other sports including basketball, soccer and martial arts.

“When I joined Special Olympics in 2004, I started playing tennis. I enjoy playing with people with similar abilities.”

This is Business Solutions Kew employee, Prairie’s first games where she is representing her state in tennis!

She has competed in basketball in previous years with her basketball team before she swapped the ball for a racket

Business Solutions Kew employee, Mandy is an absolute weapon in ice and snow.

She competed in skiing at the 2017 Special Olympics World Games in Schladming, Austria and brought home two bronze medals!

This year she is competing in swimming and is kicking for gold!

Business Solutions Kew employee, Eddie competes in swimming and ten-pin bowling. He has seen an abundance of success in his sporting career, having represented his club on a state and national level.

He and Mandy have built a strong friendship through their 30-year involvement in the Melbourne Inner East Special Olympics.

He loves meeting new people and competing with other athletes, and is excited to head to Tassie for the week.

Thank you to Employment Coach, Suzanne Brown for gathering her site’s National Games crew for a pre-event celebration. Check them out in their National Games uniforms! Each state is designated with a different colour for the opening ceremony, and for VIC, it’s blue!

So much talent in one photo! They have all bonded through work and sport, and live by the oath, ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt’.

Tennis

In 2016, Business Solutions Oakleigh employee, Edward won gold medals in both singles and doubles at nationals. In the same year, Edward competed in Abu Dhabi representing Australia where he collected a bronze medal in the singles event.


“I have a passion for tennis and have played since I was 15. I look forward to playing with some new opponents and meeting new people. I’m also looking forward to exploring Tasmania with the other athletes”

Business Solutions Seven Hills employee, Jai has been part of #TeamPossible for eight years and loves his job. He also plays a variety of other sports including basketball and shot put.
