Gavin joins the Lotteries Team

For the past five years, Gavin Salmon has worked at Business Solutions Maroochydore, learning new skills and making new friends.

When I graduated high school, I didn’t have many employment opportunities because my Dad’s work made us move around a lot,” Gavin said. “He was in the Air Force for fourteen years so we would get sent from one base to another. But I wanted to work.

As an employee, I was able to receive certification for specific equipment used on-site and I am supported no matter what by my team leaders, employment coaches and managers to develop my skills.

When his team at Business Solutions Maroochydore presented Gavin with the opportunity to also work in Lotteries’ prize home customer service team, Gavin leapt at the chance to grow professionally.

I work at the front of our prize homes and greet people as they come visit,” he said. “My job is to help people visualise the dream that this house can be theirs. I love seeing the look on people’s faces when they walk through the front door and see the home in all its beauty.

Along with helping people, Gavin is passionate about demonstrating the abilities of people with disability.

I want to show what people with disability can do. We can do things that anyone else can and provide service with a smile. You’ve just got to give us a chance.

When asked how employers can adapt workplaces for people with disability, Gavin said:

We just need the support. Give us a chance and train us up. If we’re committed to doing the work, then it means we can do the job. It doesn’t matter what disability someone has or what gender they are. We can challenge ourselves any day we want and achieve our goals. Give us the same amount of respect that you would like and together we can help achieve what a company needs.
