Gary’s passion for art keeps growing

Art is a beautiful way to express who you are and for Gary, who lives in Toowoomba, it’s a big part of who he is. Gary has been living with his housemates for almost one year and is so passionate about art, he can be seen drawing every single day, without fail.

Gary is active in his community and loves nothing more than to visit the art galleries as often as he can with his support worker on shift, usually Jon Knowles, Rohan Tootell or Tim Lang. Gary gets tired easily, and finds too much noise and light overstimulating, but despite this, he tries to get out to the galleries around every 4-6 weeks.

Gary is inspired to create artworks from events that happen around him and will often get out into nature to take photos that he uses as a reference for his art works. Support worker, Courtney Stoel, said that Gary loves to do ‘commission’ type art pieces the most.

Gary has painted his physio’s cats; he did a painting of another client’s guinea pig, and he has done a portrait of all the clients next door at bowling. If you ask him to paint/draw something, he has a million questions about it and loves the challenge. He never has anything bad to say about his art! Staff are constantly on the lookout for beautiful references, and will bring him flowers to paint

Recently the world famous, Bathurst 1000, a race that draws a crowd of super enthusiastic car lovers together, was a source of inspiration for this budding artist. Gary created an artwork for one of his housemates, showing off one of the most popular cars that are raced, the Ford Mustang.

Gary has been drawing his whole life as a form of expression and says,

I’ve been doing this ever since I could remember.

Gary is also no stranger to the spoken word and takes opportunities to write and recite his own poems. Courtney says,

You can listen to him speak and not get bored.

We are so proud of Gary and his support team who are encouraging him to use art to express the world around him and we can’t wait to hear more about his poetry in the future.
