Eddie, Oakleigh’s quiet achiever on the world stage
Who would have thought that quietly spoken, hardworking Eddie Graham has been keeping such a cool secret? While we’ve known him as a dedicated member of Oakleigh social enterprise, Eddie has also been making waves on the tennis court, reaching as far as Abu Dhabi to compete in the World Games in 2019, where he brought home Bronze in the singles!
Over the years, Eddie has racked up an impressive collection of medals, including:
- Gold for doubles at his first Nationals
- Gold for singles and gold for doubles at his second Nationals in Adelaide
- And many more victories along the way!

Inspired by the greats
Watching The Grand Slams as a teenager first sparked Eddie’s passion for tennis. Inspired by legends like Mark Philippoussis, Andre Agassi, Pat Rafter and of course, the fiery John McEnroe (luckily for us our Eddie does not have Mr McEnroe’s tendency to be bad tempered).
His love for the sport really took hold at fifteen while he was on holiday in Sydney with his cousins. They spent their days watching the Australian Open, playing Super Mario Brothers, hitting the courts at Sydney University, and cooling off in the pool, only to start the cycle again the next day.
Eddie also speaks proudly and fondly of his inspirational coach Jimmy Dee who motivated Eddie to be the best tennis player he can be.
One memory that still makes him laugh was playing a match in 40 degree heat with no sunscreen and no water, only to be hit with a splitting headache. You live and you learn!

Got his eye on the prize
Never one to rest on his laurels, every month Eddie plays in the Special Olympics Competition in Hurstbridge, hoping to make it again firstly to The Regionals, then The Nationals and then, and if all goes well, another shot at the World Games.
“Eddie, with your drive and determination, we have no doubt that we will see you at the top of your game yet again.” Said Oakleigh Site Manager, Nalin Arachchige.
“What an inspirational man we have in our midst!”
Congratulations, Eddie! We’re all cheering you on 🏅
