David Huxley Training hub opens at Maroochydore Social Enterprise!

The Huxley hub training room at Maroochydore

David Huxley loved his job at Endeavour Foundation so much that when he made his will, he gave the organisation that had supported him for a lifetime something wonderful in return: the gift of learning.

In 1957, David attended our first ever school as a four-year-old – at Bowen House in Brisbane.

David’s sister Lorayne Clark said he lived a rich and full life thanks to his job and the support around him.

David thought he should do everything that we could do – ‘If they could go to school, why shouldn’t I?’, that was his attitude – and that’s why he kept working at Endeavour Foundation after school, first in Bowen Hills and then in Maroochydore from 1979 to 2017.

David’s legacy is his love of learning spanned over 35 years, and when he passed away in January 2021, the idea for the David Huxley Training Hub at Maroochydore Social Enterprise was born.

In September 2022, the training hub named in his honour was revealed in a heart-warming event. The David Huxley Training Hub features the latest cutting-edge Virtual Reality, with unique programs custom-made to help people learn new skills in a safe environment. At the opening, David’s younger sister, Dale, gave an earnest speech expressing her support of David’s bequest.

The hub is great and David, Mum and Dad would be so proud and happy to see it and would wholeheartedly approve of its function

As a family we all appreciated that David was so happy to go to work each day and that this routine was so fulfilling for him.

Training and the teaching of new skills is a vital contribution to the development of independence and self-esteem, and the Huxley family wish you every success with the Hub and it’s performance in the future.

Thank you for the opportunity to express our families support for what you have achieved here with David’s bequest.

Executive General Manager of Work, Eric Teed, was honoured to officially open the training room.

It makes me immensely proud to think that a person supported by Endeavour Foundation for more than half-a-century would think to leave us this gift in their will

Like many people with disability David Huxley faced significant social barriers in life, but Endeavour Foundation was there to support him from school until retirement.
