Since finishing school in 2022, Hugo regularly asked his sister, Cecilia, if he could work with her at the Gallipoli Barracks Defence base in Enoggera, Brisbane.
Cecilia spotted a great opportunity for Hugo when she worked with Defence Service Assistants (DSAs) in the Defence Assistance Program (DAP) who were digitising documents.
Cecilia told Team Coordinator, Robert, about her brother’s interest and how he’d always wanted to work at a Defence base like her and their brother Joe. When Robert invited Hugo for a visit, he said:
“Hugo was in complete amazement about the prospect of working at Gallipoli Barracks. He then came back for a four-hour trial and met the team.”
This experience sealed the deal for Hugo who had found his community.
I thought working in DAP at Endeavour Foundation was just the answer for me.
— Hugo
Once Hugo turned 18 in mid-April 2023 he was offered his very first job as a DSA in DAP at Gallipoli Barracks, making him the youngest employee in the program. A very proud moment for Hugo and his family.
“When I got the job Cecilia and Joe were blown away, they were really excited,” Hugo said.
