Brock’s achievements in sports, employment and gaining independence are beyond doubt

When faced with doubt from others, Southport social enterprise employee, Brock Bennett, inspires us all by saying, “Don’t let it get you down when people say you can’t do something. Instead, use that as motivation to show them you can!”

This insight is rooted in Brock’s resilience, optimism and determination – qualities he has cultivated through his pursuits in sports, employment and gaining independence.

The athlete’s spirit

Brock’s lifelong love for sports ignited his passion for futsal and soccer as a teenager. However, when he expressed interest in trying out for his high school’s futsal team, he faced scepticism from peers who doubted his abilities.

“It really upset me when they said I didn’t have what it takes to join the team,” he said.

“But when I spoke to my grandfather, he told me, ‘That’s complete bull! You can do anything you set your mind to.’

“After hearing him say that it gave me the confidence to try anyway and prove the doubters wrong.”

And that he did! Not only did Brock make the team, but he was awarded ‘Most Improved Player’, led his team to tournament victories as their assistant coach and earnt the respect of his peers.

These achievements instilled in Brock the confidence to tackle future challenges head-on and score more wins.

At just 18, Brock became the youngest manager in his soccer club’s history, playing as an attacking midfielder – a position he has maintained for over a decade.

He has also broken seven sporting records and is the first player in his team’s history to have a trophy named after him: ‘The Striking Ball’!

Brock’s experiences on the field have equipped him with the mental strength to persevere during stressful times and moments of self-doubt.

“Every win that I have on and off the field reminds me of what I’m capable of,” he said.

Embracing his independence

Brock’s athlete mindset fuels his ambitions in other areas of his life too. In February 2023, he joined #TeamPossible when he commenced work at Southport social enterprise.

The inclusive workplace provides him with job stability, learning opportunities and tailored support to fulfil his desire for professional growth. His team actively supports him in taking on new tasks, enabling him to expand his skill set and confidence.

From learning how to use a pallet jack and joining his work’s Client Committee to dismantling flat-screen TVs and computers, Brock has gained valuable skills that strengthen his resume and allow him to assist friends and family with tech issues.

“I like being able to learn new skills that are useful for helping my family and mates, like with tech problems,” he shared.

“One day my parents had an issue with their TV and I was able to fix it because I know how they work from taking them apart,”

Just as he values teamwork on the field, Brock appreciates the supportive community he has found at work.

“The mateship I have here is great and a welcome addition to my life,” he shared, emphasising how meaningful relationships have supported his journey.

Brock has also moved into a home closer to work, enjoying the newfound convenience and independence this new chapter brings.

Living independently has unlocked Brock’s desire to improve his budgeting skills so he can effectively balance rent and expenses while saving for experiences that matter most to him.

“I’m very happy that my income supports my rent payments,” he said.

It also means I can afford to do trips and activities outside of work with my mates.

Brock’s journey is a reminder of the strength that comes from embracing challenges and overcoming barriers to unlock potential. His athlete mindset and commitment to personal growth inspire those around him to believe in their own abilities. He also encourages employers to nurture inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.

“Don’t look past people with disability,” Brock said.

We are dedicated, determined and want to contribute. Just give us a chance and we will show you what we are made of.

This year Brock spoke at a stakeholder meeting at work, sharing his inspiring journey in sports and employment.

Through experiences like these, he has discovered a passion for public speaking and hopes to inspire others by sharing his story more widely.

He would also love to become a voice actor one day, with him proudly showing off his Shaggy impression from Scooby-Doo and Western accent during a recent interview (spoiler alert: it was so good!).

Brock’s story shows how misconceptions can limit opportunities for people with disability. However, with a supportive network, resilience and a positive mindset, anything is possible.

Let Brock’s story remind you that someone telling you “you can’t” is an opportunity to show them YOU CAN.

Together, we can create a future where all abilities are celebrated and support replaces scepticism. Instead of doubting someone’s potential, let’s encourage them to give it a go – because every person is capable of achieving extraordinary things.
