Ayr L&L crew embraces NAIDOC Week

In recognition of the 2024 NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, teams across our diverse services ignited meaningful conversations by learning and engaging with the wisdom and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The team at Ayr L&L celebrated with daily NAIDOC activities throughout NAIDOC Week. This included traditional Torres Strait Islander cooking and viewing a 60-metre artwork of the Gubulla Munda snake, which holds sacred cultural and spiritual significance to the Traditional Owners. Gubulla Munda is an Aboriginal totem and protective spirit for the Birri Gubba people.

There was more traditional food on Thursday too when a group attended a community event at the local hospital for a delicious meal of crocodile and kangaroo kebabs, cake and face painting.

There was also time to celebrate culture through creativity. People at Ayr L&L watched some traditional dancing on the e-screen while they traced the outline of their hands on coloured paper and cut them out. They then arranged the paper hands on a wall to create a tree of culture.

The group finished up the week learning about the symbolism of the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and then enjoyed using cultural colours in dot face painting.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Ayr L&L’s Individual Support Trainee, Amber Sutherland, who shared her culture by facilitating many of the week’s activities.
