Andrew learns new skills to set him up at home

Andrew Lions has been with joined the Lawnton L&L hub in March 1989 Before moving into his first home at Greens Court in 1994. Andrew later moved to Forrest Beach in November 2005, where he lives now.

Andrew has become significantly more independent over the years and has recently started doing more for himself. These days he helps with his washing, assists staff with shopping and he recently learnt how to use the TV remote on his own. He can now change channels whenever he pleases. As well as always being very eager to learn new skills, Andrew also loves cooking on the barbecue and in the kitchen, especially when sausages are on the menu. He’s always been a big help when it comes to cooking sausages.

If a cook is ever needed anywhere, Andrew is quick to be volunteer chef. The meals he cooks and prepares are planned at the client service meeting once a month and all the housemates go grocery shopping once a month. He loves to be involved in all the stages, giving him a sense of ownership over the tasks that he does.

Andrew is anything but a one-trick-pony. He not only, shops for ingredients and cooks up meals but he also knows how to clean. A lady named Erika observed Andrew educating staff on vacuuming and commented…

“I love that Andrew is showing staff how to hoover (vacuum) now too. Is he usually quite outgoing like that”

Andrew is known to be very outgoing if he’s with people he knows however with new people he is quiet and reserved until he is comfortable with them.

It’s safe to say that our friend also has a creative, crafty side since he loves making mats from fabric material which he buys at lifeline salvos. Andrew often is driven to sit down and make them for hours.    He has his own mat making board which he strings and threads fabric material ties off the ends of. He’ll cut material up into strips and choose the material colours desired for the mats as well. After his creations are complete, he sells them. Andrew has a hat with the words “I make hats,” embroidered on it.

The team feel Andrew is growing in his independence as staff have noticed positive small changes in the way that he works through the process when new tasks given to him.

We are all extremely proud of Andrew’s achievements, helpfulness and we look forward to hearing more about how he continues to grow.
