Defence Support Assistant, Amanda, who has worked in the Defence Assistance Program at Robertson Barracks in the Northern Territory (NT) for six years has revealed some hidden talents.
Amanda has been ten-pin bowling for fifteen years and recently competed at the National Bowling Championships in South Australia.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t come home with a championship win, but we gave it our best shot and will continue to grow as a team and to work on our skills,” she said.
“We got sixth in the Overall Interstate Teams and eighth in the Gold Cup.
“This wasn’t my first time representing NT at Bowling. I started representing NT when I was 17 years old and this was in Hobart, Tasmania. I have only missed one tournament; this was last year in 2022 because of COVID.”
Amanda’s discovered her love of bowling when she was 14 and her Mum encouraged her to find a fun and active activity. From the activities available through Total Recreation, a NT service providing sport and recreational opportunities for people living with a disability, Amanda chose bowling. After her first few sessions, she was hooked. Amanda’s enjoyment of the sport grew, and it continues to be something she is feels passionate about. So, what is it about bowling that has Amanda hooked?
Who wouldn’t like bowling? It’s FUN!……. Also getting the highest score.

Amanda is a member of the NT Disability Ten Pin Bowling Team that is part of the Ten Pin Bowling Association of NT. She enjoys meeting a lot of new people at the team training sessions each Monday night with volunteer coaches, Kaye and Jenny.
“The main bowling alley up here in Darwin shut down during COVID, which was extremely upsetting for the disability community, who have a large group of people committed to bowling and for whom bowling is more than just a hobby,” Kaye said.
“They still don’t have another bowling facility, but ‘King Pin’ are now up here and have been working with them to accommodate as much as they can at their facility.”
What’s next for Amanda’s bowling and work life at DAP?

“I have been working at DAP Darwin for six years, I am one of the original team members,” Amanda said.
“I absolutely love coming to work. I have now increased my working days to four days a week.
“At the moment we are unsure of any future tournaments, I’ll continue my practice and hopefully I can continue to represent NT.”
