Alex finds his voice through VR!

Alex Armstrong has been an employee at Townsville social enterprise for 7.5 years, where he works removing fluorescent lights and dismantling TVs, printers, and other electronic equipment.

In the past, Alex found communicating challenging because of his reserved nature.

“Alex, in general, is a very quiet person,” said Melissa Te Waaka, Site Manager at Townsville social enterprise.

“He really needs to warm up to you before he will even consider using his voice.”

However, a recent breakthrough has transformed Alex’s ability to express himself, thanks to the introduction Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Our VR learning modules enable people to learn new skills in a safe environment.

During a group session, Alex not only found his voice but spoke loudly and clearly, interacting with both employees and simulations on the screen. His laughter and happiness showed the impact the VR equipment had on his communication skills and were unforgettable moments for everyone on site.

“I believe VR just allows him to express himself with his voice alongside his body language and movement,” Melissa said.

“It was honestly quite shocking seeing him use his voice in such a way as whenever we can get him to talk, it’s very, very soft.”

Alex experienced with a range of VR simulations, from jungles with exotic animals to towering skyscrapers and even encounters with a virtual Tyrannosaurus Rex. He also completed VR learning modules, including train safety. Overcoming these challenges has boosted Alex’s confidence, opening doors to more opportunities.

In addition to the progress in his communication skills, Alex’s increased social engagement is unmistakable. While he may always be a quiet and reserved person, the VR experience has allowed him to express himself more openly.

“I saw him today dancing around in the shed genuinely having a good time,” Melissa said.

“I don’t know whether the VR experience has helped him feel more comfortable around peers and staff or if he is just happy at work today, one thing for sure is that he has been more expressive through his body language.”

During a lunchtime game of ‘Hop n Pop,’ Alex surprised everyone by laughing out loud, providing strategic moves, and expressing excitement throughout the game, showing a level of engagement that left everyone amazed.

Join us in celebrating Alex and his newfound confidence! Together, we can create an inclusive and empowering environment to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we support.
