The 2024 Queensland Training Awards gala dinner was held last Saturday, and a huge congratulations are in order for state finalist and Community Solutions trainee Clayton Lavis.
Clayton took out the North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award, progressing to the prestigious state finals as just one of seven finalists in his category.

Feeling unfulfilled at university, Clayton completed a civil construction traineeship before deciding his future lay in an office environment. With his sights now set on this pathway, he commenced his Certificate III in Business Administration with Community Solutions in May 2023 and completed it two months ahead of the nominal completion date.
His Community Solutions Field Officer, Stuart Birch, commended his relentless pursuit of improvement.
“Clayton tackles every task with unwavering determination and precision,” Stuart said.
He’s a very self-driven and passionate individual with professionalism and work ethic beyond his years.
After securing a traineeship at Pacific Rim Technical Services, Clayton’s interest in business only increased because of the complex work he was supporting.

The organisation’s director, Greg Fitzgerald, applauded Clayton’s commitment, diligence and enthusiasm that he brought to his role.
“Through his keen interest in learning about the technical side of our business, Clayton has excelled in ensuring accuracy in all his work, adherence to procedures, and even has offered recommendations to improve processes that have since been implemented.”
Clayton said the impact his hard work had on his younger siblings was a heartwarming surprise.
“I’m the second oldest of five siblings,” he said.
“Strangely, my accomplishments have had a larger impact on my younger siblings compared to myself.
“We didn’t grow up in the most luxurious environment, and to them, my sporadic movement away from my hometown and bouncing between university courses and jobs is scary.
With time, however, I’ve shown them that it’s scary doing something new, but if they really want something, they can get it. They can move away from home one day and even if its not the most conventional pathway, that it is an extremely valid path and success will come.
Congratulations Clayton on making the state finals, what an achievement!
