Queensland Theatre’s COST OF LIVING Bille Brown Theatre Until 13 July (various performances Mon-Sat – check times on webpage for evenings 6.30pm/7.30pm and matinees Wed and Sat) Does love have a bottom line? Former carer turned Playwright Martyna Majok won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for this play in 2018 and it’s easy to see why. This is a beautifully rendered story about our need to care (or be cared for) no matter the distance that age, class, race and disability might place between us. Told with deft humour and enormous heart, the Australian premiere of this highly-lauded work is directed by Priscilla Jackman (The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race) and Dan Daw, also appearing as John, with Philip Quast as Eddie, Kate Hood as Ani and Zoe de Plevitz as Jess. Martyna Majok won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Cost of Living. The play centres on two sets of relationships. John, a wealthy student at Princeton University with cerebral palsy, hires the secretive Jess as his carer. Meanwhile, unemployed truck driver Eddie tries to reconcile with his ex-wife Ani, who has become a wheelchair user after an accident. This co-production between Queensland Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company is co-directed by Priscilla Jackman and Dan Daw, who plays John. “It’s an incredibly powerful story about the intersection of people [who have a] lived experience of disability and those who don’t, and people who have the privilege of money and those who don’t,” says Kip Williams, Artistic Director of STC. “Worth its weight in gold”— The New York Times “Sensational!
