Wear rainbow with pride
Inclusion is all about taking action to show those around you that they are valued and welcomed.
We encourage everyone to join us in wearing rainbow. Rainbows are associated with the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community and is used to express pride.
Why?
Friday 17 May is IDAHOBIT Day a day that marks the anniversary of 17 May, 1990, when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. IDAHOBIT standards for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia and as time has progressed holds reference to a day against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination to specifically include those who are lesbian, queer and asexual.
Unfortunately, even with Marriage Equality, the LGBTQIA+ community continue to be discriminated against with stigma still prevalent around the world. If this is not your lived experience, you may be surprised to know that in Australia:
- 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees are not out to everyone in the workplace
- 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth experiences abuse due to their identity and
- 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months
You can show up every day and be an active ally taking a stand against discrimination
At Endeavour Foundation we want everyone to feel safe and included and feel like you belong.
Be informed: talk to LGBTQIA+ friends, family or colleagues, read LGBTQIA+ related publications, social media and videos. Avoid assumptions through the use of words like, ‘partner’ in lieu of ‘husband/wife’ or ‘boyfriend or girlfriend.’
Useful resources:
Understanding diverse experiences and perspectives can help you to understand where you can show up and be an active ally.
Be visible and promote yourself as an ally by:
- wearing a pin
- displaying inclusion posters in your team’s area
- share your story of why you’re an ally
- celebrate other days of significance such as Pride Month, Wear It Purple Day, International Transgender Day of Visibility.
Being a visible ally makes a big difference to how everyone can feel safe and included.
Be part of the solution: Talk about pronouns, advocate for inclusive language, take a stand against homophobic, biphobic or transphobic slurs, call out jokes or negative behaviours or comments.
Every day is a day to be an ally!
