Diwali

Diwali (also known as Divali or Deepavali) is a colourful ‘festival of lights’ that reflects themes of hope and renewal. It honours the triumph of light over dark, good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. On the night of Diwali, people illuminate their homes and streets with candles and clay lamps (diyas), symbolizing the inner light that protects against spiritual darkness.

Although Diwali is primarily a significant Hindu festival, it is celebrated by many people around the world reflecting its significance in diverse cultures. In Australia, Diwali is celebrated by over one million people in Hindu, Jain, Newar Buddhist and Sikh communities, each bringing their own unique traditions like Tihar and Bandi Chhor Diwas.

The festival’s origin stories vary by region, but common elements include the lighting of diyas, indulging in sweets, and gathering with family. For some communities, Diwali marks the start of a new year. The date is based on the Hindu lunar calendar, typically falling in late October or early November. This year, it will be celebrated from October 31 to November 1.

As we acknowledge Diwali, we encourage respect and understanding for the diverse cultural traditions within our community. If you would like to know more, SBS have released a short video on the celebrations of Diwali. You can watch the video here:
