“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” — Audrey Hepburn
The employees at Rockhampton social enterprise have brought this inspiring metaphor to life. With support from Production Team Leaders, Clancy Clarke and Don Richardson, they have transformed an unused, weed-choked space into a vibrant and productive on-site garden.
Their journey began with employees working together to weed and enrich the soil, followed by planting seedlings. The employees then decided to share garden maintenance duties, including daily watering and fortnightly weeding. By seamlessly integrating these duties into their work schedules, they continue to develop their gardening skills without interrupting their primary production roles.

Aaron, an enthusiastic gardener with the goal of one day working in a nursery environment, has found this project particularly fulfilling. His colleague, Duncan, cherishes the relaxation and joy he experiences while tending to the garden, which has a positive impact on his wellbeing.
The employees are excited about the rewards of their hard work, which will soon include a variety of produce from tomatoes and peas to tropical fruits like pineapple and passionfruit. These additions also level up their weekly lunches and promote healthy eating.
Through their dedication, the Rockhampton social enterprise employees have turned Hepburn’s words into a flourishing reality. Their efforts highlight how nurturing nature can lead to personal and professional growth, creating a beautiful and productive space that benefits everyone involved.
