Purple power 💜 Sharing stories of support and inclusion

We proudly celebrated Wear It Purple Day on Friday 30 August, an annual event that recognises and supports young people in the LGBTIQA+ community.

This year’s theme was Your Passion, Your Pride, a celebration of LGBTIQA+ people openly and visibly achieving their dreams in sport, art, science and more.

As part of the celebration, we asked people to enter our Wear It Purple Day prize draw by sharing in 25 words or less what the colour purple means to them.

Here are some of the touching and thoughtful responses:

“To support my transgender child and because purple is my favourite colour.” — H.D

“I’ll be wearing purple to show support for LGBTIQA+ youth and to share the importance of love, respect and inclusivity in our communities.” — S

Whether it’s standing up for our loved ones, advocating for diversity and inclusion in our workplace or simply showing that we care, we are proud to wear purple as a symbol of unity and respect.

One of our competition winners, Support Worker,Helga Dawson-Kerr (pictured), said she plans to share the items in her prize pack with her colleagues and people we support at the Learning and Lifestyle hub where she works in Norman Gardens. Go Helga!

Together, let’s continue to promote acceptance, inclusion and love for all. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their beautiful stories. Let’s keep creating a safe, welcoming space for everyone, every day.

“I’ll be wearing purple to celebrate all our fabulous LGBTIQA+ clients and colleagues.” — M.G

“I’ll be wearing purple to show my support for and celebration of our LGBTIQA+ workers and their strength and pride.” — L.M

“Photo (photo submitted with entry) is a tribute to my mum and her partner of 30+ years. Wearing the purple bridesmaid dress showing acceptance of their love.” — M.M

“I’m wearing purple because representation and advocacy matters in a safe, welcoming workplace. LGBTIQA+ people are always supported and safe in expressing their true selves with me!” — E.V

These statements reflect the deep personal connections and reasons many of us have for getting involved with Wear It Purple Day.
